For a tape whose initial appeal was the instant and gratifying relief it brought to everyone waiting for M.I.A.'s full-length, Diplo ironically saves M.I.A.'s best cuts for last. "URAQT" is a jittery mess of flirting, territory-marking, and text-messaging (!): "You fuckin with my man and you text him all the time/ You mighta had him once but I have him all the time," and later, "U-R-A-Q-T/ Is your daddy dealer, cause you're dope to me!" For dessert, Diplo brings "Big Pimpin'" out of retirement to back M.I.A.'s raspy "Bingo": "Do you know what is on? Do you know what is on? Do you know how this beat is made in fucking Lon-d-d-don?" The song's obviously great, but between M.I.A.'s fierce deliveries and the braggart beat, it sounds weird and ominous, a black-hole closer to an album brimming with life.

Ostensibly, yes, the aim was to make India's first album of Trap music but over the 4 months spent ruminating over the concept, much emerged that wasn't sound. In the U.S. they refer to the "trap house" as the seedy location where criminals engage in nefarious illegal activities. The meaning of the name is somewhat obvious - the lifestyle is tempting, full of the many pleasures of life and heaps of bravado, but in the end, it's a trap. It consumes you, not the other way around and you can't just get up and walk out.So i've come to believe that most brown people around the world are Trapistani's, even though Trapistani's come in all colors, shapes & sizes. We're still largely "trapped" in belief systems, value systems, institutional systems that are outdated and serve to maintain the status quo. We pray to different Gods yet we all suffer the same fate. From Jersey City to Jalandhar, Dubai to Dharavi, we're trapped by a trail of history, culture, genetics and environment that is greater than all of us. For whatever it's worth, Trapistan is my attempt to break out. There are more than a few people I'd like to give special thanks to for helping me finish the album with their encouragement and feedback: Tej Brar, Sohail Arora, Mohammed Abood, Kerry Harwin, Jatin Puri, Arjun Rajkishore, Sahej Bakshi, Udyan Sagar, Nikhil Kaul. The list of people I have to thank for supporting Su Real in general is much longer and look forward to doing that in person across the country on the album launch tour!Artwork: Arjun RajkishoreMastering: Jatin PuriPhotography: Sachin Soni 2ff7e9595c
